Girls Purple and Green Bedding

In my opinion girls purple and green bedding is perfect! However, there is nothing at all inappropriate about mixing it up with other colors so long as they are edgy and do nothing to diminish the decorative impact of the initial color scheme, right? Certainly orange, electric blue and black are all very modern colors that should appeal to a teenage girl, right? Well, keep reading and you will see there are times when my assumptions get me in trouble!
That is certainly the idea that I was operating under when I included a bright and bold set of bedding with all of the wild colors that I mentioned on my design board to present to a young girl (tween or early teenage years) who had casually mentioned the possibility of a purple and lime green color scheme for her bedroom.
To make a long story short, I either did not understand how strongly she wanted a set of girls purple and green bedding that did not include any other color whatsoever or she had been shopping around looking at pictures of purple and lime green bedrooms and made the decision that she had a distinct dislike for all the complementary colors that might normally be used as accent colors.
Always one to believe that the customer is always right, I backtracked my way out of the multi-colored bedding and decor and am back on track with a much simpler bedroom decorating project that I was proposing. And why should I care as the money’s the same either way and the decorated room will be very cute when I’m done. Perhaps I just wanted to make things more interesting for my own sake and in this case, I was wrong to do so.

"High" Ankle Sprains
We have been discussing the ankle in class, and one of the topics has been the "high" ankle sprain. The most common type of ankle sprain is the "lateral" ankle sprain, which damages the ligaments on the outside of the ankle that connect the talus to the fibula. Most of the time when people "roll" their ankle, they sustain a "lateral" ankle sprain. While not as common, the "high", or "syndesmosis" ankle sprain, can be much more debilitating. With a "high" ankle sprain, there is damage to the ligaments of the distal tibiofibular joint, primarily the anterior inferior and posterior inferior tibiofibular ligaments, and sometimes the interosseous membrane. To sustain a high ankle sprain, the talus, through hyperdorsiflexion, is forced up between the tibia and fibula, thus separating the bones from each other. This often occurs during a pile up in football when a player lands on the back of the leg of a lineman. Recovery for a high ankle sprain is often lengthy. Every time we walk or run, the talus is forced up into the distal tibiofibular joint. In a healthy person, this is not a problem, but in a person that has damaged these ligaments, it makes recovery difficult.

In March of 2004 Phillip and I drove from Las Vegas to Tucson, AZ to see Yeah Yeah Yeahs play at a little place called Club Congress. We were madly in love with the band’s album Fever to Tell which had come out the April before as well as their early self titled EP. They weren’t coming to Vegas but we had to see them! We still remember that road trip to Tucson as being one of the greatest of our relationship (so far). The show itself was moved outdoors to the courtyard of the The Hotel Congress and during the opening act I spotted guitarist Nick Zinner hanging out. I approached him, said hello, and asked why Vegas had been left off the tour. He told me they would never play Vegas, they hate Vegas, they’d had a disastrous show there once and would never go back. Well ok then. By the time Yeah Yeah Yeahs were set to take the stage, the small crowd was in a frenzy waiting for Karen O and when she finally appeared it exploded. YYYs went on to perform one of the sexiest, raw, crazy, and rocking shows I’d ever seen! Back then Karen O was wild on stage, she was all over the place, smiling crazy at the audience the whole time, chugging two beers at once, spilling most of it all over her body, jumping, screaming, writhing, amazing! All in a shimmery leotard-like body suit. I’d never seen anything like her before. In the audience, the boys loved her and the girls WORSHIPPED her.
Jump ahead to September of 2009. Two albums later, the band has evolved into something a little less rock n roll. I still like their music, but none of it has the raw sexuality and pure rock n roll heart that their first album had. YYYs are set to play The Pearl at The Palms. I guess Nick’s statement about never playing Vegas just didn’t hold true now that they are a bigger act. Phillip and I had never been to this venue in Las Vegas before and tickets were fairly reasonable so despite the fact that we don’t like their new music as much as their old music we decide to go to the show. The Pearl is nice, small, intimate. We don’t have standing room only floor tickets; the floor is really small. We have seats and they are good: dead center, about 10 rows up. Wow. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs sure put on a different show from the last time I saw them! Karen O still moves all over the stage, but not wildly. In fact she is so controlled now that it actually comes off as contrived and rehearsed. The crowd really got excited when she would crash her foot down on a pedal onstage and colored paper confetti would shoot out at them! Really, confetti is exciting? The stage itself was very impressive with a large bullseye that lit up in multiple colors and a huge round eyeball in the center. But it felt to me like YYYs have simply lost their soul. They are cold and controlled and play too many ballads and not enough rock n roll. I miss their dirtiness. I miss their rawness. I was bored. Oh and they played for just over an hour including the encore.
That’s just lame.

Rate limiters
I apologize for the length of time between posts. We have been discussing the concept of rate limiters recently in motor development. A rate limiter is an individual constraint, or system, that holds back of slows the emergence of a motor skill. One example would be a five year old trying to shoot a basketball on a ten foot goal. He or she will lack the muscular strength to shoot the ball at a goal this high. Therefore, the muscular system would be the rate limiter. We had a really good discussion in class about how a single rate limiter of one system can affect numerous systems. As we age, certain parts of our body begin to break down. A common problem is arthritis. As people develop arthritis, which affects the joints, they tend to decrease their amount of physical activity. Well, a lack of physical activity leads to a loss of bone mass, muscle mass, degeneration of the nervous system, and many other health problems. So, what starts off as one problem eventually leads to the development of several problems. It is important to determine what rate limiter may be holding a person back and attempt to correct it before more problems arise.

We know now that Twilight theme bedrooms are here to stay so it's natural that some girls' Twilight bedroom accessories are in order to complete the overall look of the room. After all, without some appropriate Twilight decorations all you have is an attractive dusty, purple comforter that only the most dedicated movie fans will correctly identify as Bella's Twilight bedding set seen in the film!
After tweens and teens, who keep their vampire bedroom designs the whole year round rather than just for Halloween, expressed the need for cute stuff that would complement their Twilight bedding sets I started looking for decorative items other than the usual posters and cardboard standups of their favorite characters.
I made a search of the movie's promotional items (destined to become highly collectible memorabilia, I'm sure) to see if there was any merchandise that would make tasteful Twilight bedroom accessories and decorations.
My favorite by far was the very rare Edward and Bella jewelry box. I found switchplates that would qualify, but they were in my opinion not a good match in style to the comforter set. I can't imagine why the marketing team didn't do a better job in offering curtains, area rugs and even bathroom accessories that would promote the film AND look good with the very popular bedding sets.

When it comes to skull bedding for girls I want to say that there is more to this style of decor than Halloween bedding with your standard fabric covered in witches and black cats.
The colorful skull and crossbones bedding sets that are available as we speak proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that when handled properly skeletons can be fun. In fact they have become so tame that moms are jumping on gothic pink skull baby bedding sets for their daughter's nurseries!
Let me see, how WOULD one go about making one’s earthly remains cheerful and cute? It struck me that the best way to proceed might be to take our cues from tattoos. Rarely do you see a tattoo design consisting of a single grinning skull. More often they are surrounded by the wings of an angel, roses or flowers that are in contrast to the bare bones of the design, if you will. This is a trend that seems popular with young girls, so I thought I’d give it a shot.
Recently a tween client started out requesting dark, gothic bedroom decor. At her mom’s request I managed to reach a compromise by suggesting bedroom decorating ideas based on a set of pink skull bedding for girls. To back up my ideas and to make them more appealing to a teen girl focused on skulls, crossbones, hard rock bands and guitars, I printed some examples of the colorful tattoo designs that I mentioned earlier.
The pictures helped to convince my client that skull bedding for girls did not have to be black and white. In fact the skull comforter set that we eventually settled on was a sight to behold in hot pink and turquoise bedding whose fabric had all the elements that she desired.
There were skulls, rock guitars, pink roses, doves, nautical stars, horseshoes and swirling banners printed with “LOVE”. And color, oh, what a display color did this set of skull bedding show. There was hot pink and lime green layered over the turquoise blue with touches of gold and brown shadows.
To put a finishing touch on the bedroom’s decorations we added a matching turquoise blue bed skirt, a hot pink flokati area rug and popped a hot pink lampshade on a lamp and called it a day.

JENNIFER'S BODY POSTER
Vampire lovers get ready to pick up your Jennifer's Body poster masterprint before the release date of September 18th. Get ready to dress your bed in Halloween bedding for the first holiday of the fall season. I’m not really sure when Trick or Treat was raised in the ranks to a national holiday, but the retail as well as the discount stores will back me up that shoppers treat it as such.
A mother whose daughter was bugging her to go shopping for a Halloween comforter set complained to me that she felt it was such a waste of money to buy seasonal bed linens that would only be used at most a month during the course of a year. While I saw her point, the same might also be said for a prom dress that is only worn once and from that point forward, never sees the light of day.
The facts are that teenage girls love to entertain their friends in their bedrooms and college girls have a habit of drifting from one dorm room to another chatting, visiting and undoubtedly comparing their neighbor’s dorm room décor to that of their own. It’s all in fun and why shouldn’t decorating the bedroom for Halloween with spooks and goblins for a few weeks be included as part of the celebration?

Uralacher's Wrist Injury
If you follow the NFL, then you know that the Bears All Pro linebacker, Brian Urlacher, dislocated his "wrist" Sunday night against the Packers and will be out the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery yesterday. The term "wrist" only describes a general area of the body, and the exact bone that was dislocated was not disclosed in any of the press releases. The actual "wrist" is the articulation of the distal end of the radius with the proximal row of carpal bones (four bones). The most commonly dislocated carpal bone is the lunate, which is located almost directly beneath the middle finger. This bone helps hold the wrist together, and often times when it is dislocated, it must be put back into place with pins via surgery. This type of surgery requires a lengthy recovery. I was able to do some digging and Urlacher did, in fact, dislocate the lunate.

BOO! If that didn’t scare you, maybe the idea of arranging your girl’s room around a set of orange bedding might send your teeth chattering. The mere mention of selecting decor based on this color generally sends the weak of heart running for the hills and frankly I don’t get it. There is so much that can be done with an orange comforter and it is such a warm and friendly color.
If you are a holiday decorator, you may have landed here looking for a Halloween themed comforter set. Sorry to disappoint you but the purpose of this article is to convince my visitors that orange bedding and the holiday that celebrates with Trick or Treating do not necessarily march in lockstep.
The multi-colored changing leaves on the trees might draw my attention to various and sundry shades of orange in fall of the year because my habit is to study nature to get tips on workable color combinations and orange, red and brown is a winner especially with some bright yellow thrown in for good measure. But when spring rolls around I’m just as likely to jump in and try a set of orange and white or lively pink and orange bedding.
The bottom line is that no matter who says that orange is not flattering to a lady’s complexion; it is a beautiful color in a teenage girl’s bedroom. Cool things down with turquoise or neutralize the color scheme with white or dove gray but please don’t run from orange.

MCL "Sprain"
I blogged a couple of weeks ago about the difference between a "sprain" and a "strain." Well, during the Steelers-Titans game last night, there was a great example of a MCL sprain. The Medial Collateral Ligament is the ligament on the inside of the knee. It helps prevent the knee from "buckling" on the inside. It is frequently injured in football and injured much more frequently than the Lateral Collateral Ligament. Typically, the ligament is damaged by a valgus force, which is a force directed in the lateral to medial direction. In the above picture, the Titans player landed on the lateral aspect of the knee of Troy Polamalu, which stretched and damaged the MCL on the medial side. Football players are hit much more frequently on the lateral or outside of the knee, which causes damage to the MCL. Polamalu is reported to be out for 3-6 weeks, which would lead me to believe it is a Grade II MCL sprain. If the ligament was completely torn, as in the top picture, he would probably be out much longer, if not the entire season. With a grade II sprain, there is some tearing of the ligament, but not a complete disruption. He will likely wear a knee brace when he returns to help protect against a repeat of this injury.
Exercise is Medicine Part II
I blogged a couple of weeks ago about the "Exercise is Medicine" campaign and how the president of ACSM was coming to Mississippi State to help promote the campaign. Well, that day was today. There was a great turnout in front of the student union at the press conference and a standing room only crowd at question and answer session, which featured our own department head, Dr. Brown. Many students came out to support the event, and hopefully more people in the community, state, and nation will become more active. As professionals in the field of Health, I feel we have to set an example for others on the importance of physcial activity, and the best way to do this is to be active ourselves. It would be difficult for anyone in the field of health, kinesiolgy, etc., to stress the importance of exercise if they don't exercise themselves. Every journey begins with a "step", and hopefully this campaign will encourage more people to exercise. Check out the link below for more information on the program. Ingenious Contemporary Crib from i29 Interior Architects
Here is an ingenious and very practical idea for a contemporary crib. Not long ago, i29 Interior Architects completed the design of an apartment in Amsterdam. With a simple color palette, featuring wooden finishes and white furniture, this home is truly charming. One of the its focal points is a cool semi-open cabinet featured in the photos below. The advantages of such a design are numerous. With a common cabinet, most people never know where things are and keep opening all the doors before finding what they were looking for. In this situation, it is easy to have a look inside and find things a lot faster. The small openings also help with the grabbing. Moreover, this special cabinet is very aesthetic, bringing a plus of originality to an interior. This idea can be applied to almost all rooms, as storage space is needed in the entire home. Did he really fully "extend" to catch the ball?
Since this is the opening weekend of college football, we will stick with that theme. Over the course of the season, you'll undoubtedly see many diving catches like the one above. Often times, the announcer will say that the player "fully extended" to catch the pass. Well, this just isn't true. We have been discussing joint actions in class this past week, and I'm sure all of my students could tell you why this isn't true. First, we must identify the joint where the action is taking place. To say a player "fully extended" really does not give an indication of what happened. We must specify the joint where this action, such as flexion, extension, abduction, etc., is taking place. After identifying the joint, we must then identify the proper joint action. I believe that when announcers say a player "fully extended", they are referring to the shoulder/arm. Well, in the above picture, and almost all cases where a player dives for a ball, the motion at the shoulder is not extension, but flexion. The definition of flexion is a motion that decreases the angle of a joint, or moves the segment into the fetal position. In the above picture, it is clear that the athlete's shoulders are moving into the fetal position, therefore, he has shoulder flexion. He also has elbow flexion, wrist flexion, and knee flexion, making the "fully extended" statement even more incorrect. So the next time you are watching a game or Sportscenter and see a diving catch, pay close attention to the description of the movement. It just might not be accurate.
PURPLE POLKA DOT BEDDING

When is purple polka dot bedding green? Well, the word is that reactive dyes that were used to give this bold, beautiful comforter set its deep, rich design are reputed to be very healthy, in fact more so than the all-purpose dyes that are more commonly used. This type of dye is not only reported to be healthier, but softer and longer lasting. Which as we know is a good thing for bedding destined to become part of the décor in a teenage girl’s room where spilled drinks, makeup and even occasional circles of nail polish can send the bedding set to the laundry on a regular basis.
I just recommended the set of purple polka dot bedding in the pictures to a client for her daughter’s dorm room so I have not had a chance to inspect it to see if the look and feel backs up the claims made by the manufacturer. But if the initial reaction of not only the mother in the household that I am working on but her two girls is any indication, I will more than likely have not one but two sets of this cute purple bedding set in hand before the week is out. The sparkle in the eyes of those girls tell me if they are to have any input on decorating their bedrooms, then decorating a girls’ polka dot bedroom with purple polka dot bedding is in their future or more importantly, mine.
